Erick Nshimiyimana

RWANDA has given Amavubi head and assistant coaching roles to Eric Nshimiyimana and Jean Baptista Kayiranga and tasked them to qualify the country to next year’s African Nations Championship (CHAN) to be hosted by South Africa in 2014.

The Minister of Sports and Culture Protais Mitali said in a news conference on Thursday evening that the decision to appoint both Nshimiyimana and Kayiranga was reached after a careful assessment and capability on their role in helping young players improve their careers.

“We have appointed the pair because they are well vast with youth football promotion and they will simply ensure that we qualify to CHAN finals in South Africa as well as prepare a strong national team composed of young Rwandan players for 2016 CHAN which will be held in Rwanda,”

“We have full trust in Nshimiyimana as the head coach because he once held this position as an interim coach and posted good results and we have given him full responsibilities to ensure that the national team performs well in upcoming matches,”

“I am calling upon Rwandans to exercise patience as we give time for the two coaches to build a strong team for the future. We will only think about recruiting a foreign coach once the pair fail to deliver in as far as our ambitions are concerned,” added Mitali.

Nshimiyimana, an assistant coach with APR FC has also been assisting Serbian Milutin Sredojovic Micho who was sacked this week. The 40-year old former Rwandan international towering midfielder, was part of the Amavubi team that played at the 2004 African Cup of Nations in Tunisia.

He is not new with the head coaching role. In 2009, he was appointed to lead Rwanda on an interim basis after Branko Tucak’s contract was terminated after poor showing in the 2010 World Cup/Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and went on to guide Amavubi reach the final of the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup in Nairobi, Kenya.

In 2011, he was again given the interim coaching role when Ghanian Sellas Tetteh resigned after a series of disappointing results that included a humiliating 5-0 home defeat to Ivory Coast. He went on to help Rwanda snatch a 1-0 win over Benin in the last Africa Nations’ Cup qualifying match.

His assistant coach Kayiranga is well vast with youth club football. He has been appointed to identify potential young players who can be groomed with international football experience through playing exposure such that Rwanda can have a strong CHAN squad by 2016.

The goalkeepers coach Ibrahim Mugisha, team doctors Nuhu Assuman and Moussa Hakizimana will retain their positions on the national team.

After missing out on the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, Rwanda will seek to redeem herself in this tournament reserved for players playing in local league.

Amavubi Stars will start their campaign in the first round facing the winner between Eritrea and Ethiopia in June. The first Round matches are set between June 21 and 23, 2013 and the second leg two weeks later.

The final tournament will feature two teams from North Zone, two from West A Zone, three from West B Zone, three from Central Zone and three from Central East and three from South Zone (including hosts South Africa).

Democratic Republic of Congo won the inaugural CHAN tournament held in Cote d’ Ivoire in 2009 while Tunisia won the 2011 edition held in Sudan.

Gareth Bale Tottenham

Tottenham star Gareth Bale and Liverpool striker Luis Suarez head the six-man shortlist for the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award.

Chelsea and Manchester United both contribute two names to the shortlist with the champions elect represented by Robin van Persie and Michael Carrick, and Eden Hazard and Juan Mata making the list for the London club.

Bale, though, is the odds-on favourite to win the award for the second time following his success in 2011, and the Wales international is also named on the shortlist for the PFA Young Player of the Year award.

Hazard also doubles up on the junior list, where he is joined by Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku, currently on loan at West Brom, Manchester United’s Danny Welbeck, Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere and Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke.

Van Persie won the senior award last season and looked to be the leading candidate to hold onto the trophy at the turn of the year. However, a drop in the Dutchman’s form, coupled with Bale’s stunning performances for Tottenham, which have seen him score 22 goals in all competitions, led to a swing in the Welshman’s favour.

Suarez, with 22 league goals for a Liverpool side that has struggled for consistency, is the second favourite to win the coveted trophy, first awarded to Leeds United defender Norman Hunter in 1974.

The striker – once banned for eight games for racially abusing Patrice Evra – is a controversial figure, but PFA chairman Gordon Taylor said he was worthy of a place given his performances for Liverpool.

“Sometimes controversy travels with players,” said Taylor. “Sometimes it is in their very nature. Sometimes it is that very intensity that causes a problem also makes sure they win.

“Luis Suarez is helping to restore Liverpool. It is a credit to them that he seems comfortable there and no one could deny he is one of the finest players in the world.

“It is very difficult at times. Players are expected to be top role models and set the finest example. That goes with the trade these days. I don’t underestimate the need for them to do all they can to be seen as a good example. But they are also human beings. It is not always possible to put old heads on relatively young shoulders.

“This is a footballing award and Suarez’s footballing ability shines through. It would be naive to think controversy won’t continue to travel with him. But I think his football has maintained his place.”

Mata’s imperious performances for Chelsea have outshone even team-mate Hazard, but neither Chelsea playmaker is expected to be in genuine contention. Carrick, meanwhile, has had a fine season for United, but the quintessential unsung hero will also be disappointed, according to the bookmakers.

The Young Player of the Year shortlist has two rather contentious choices given Wilshere, the winner in 2011, has had an injury-hit season and Welbeck has scored just one Premier League goal all season.

Belgian strikers Benteke and Lukaku join compatriot Hazard on the shortlist after scoring 15 and 13 league goals this season respectively.

PFA Player of the Year shortlist: Gareth Bale, Michael Carrick, Eden Hazard, Juan Mata, Luis Suarez, Robin van Persie.PFA Young Player of the Year shortlist: Gareth Bale, Christian Benteke, Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku, Danny Welbeck, Jack Wilshere.

PFA Women’s Player of the Year shortlist: Gemma Davison, Toni Duggan, Jessica Fishlock, Kim Little, Jordan Nobbs, Jodie Taylor.

Former England captain John Terry refused to shake hands with FA chairman David Bernstein at Friday’s Champions League trophy handover.

Bernstein ruled that Chelsea defender Terry should be stripped of the England captaincy after being charged with racially abusing Anton Ferdinand of Queens Park Rangers in October 2011.

Terry and club mates Frank Lampard, Branislav Ivanovic, Petr Cech and Fernando Torres were at the handover in London’s Whitehall when the trophy they won last year was presented to Britain’s Sports Minister Hugh Robertson by Uefa president Michel Platini.

The Chelsea skipper rejected Bernstein’s attempt to shake hands when the two came together after the presentation ceremony.

“It’s a difficult one for me – he went and spoke about me in the court case,” Terry told Sky Sports television.

Asked if he shook Bernstein’s hand, the Chelsea defender replied: “No”.

Terry was cleared of the racism charge in court but the FA later banned him for four matches for the incident that occurred in a Premier League match between QPR and Chelsea at Loftus Road.

Bernstein said he had no idea the Chelsea player had snubbed him.

“My relationships with everyone here are really fantastic,” the FA chairman told reporters. “I didn’t notice a thing and I think we should talk about more positive things than that sort of nonsense.”

Asked about his relationship with Terry, Bernstein said they were “a little distant” but he did not seem too bothered about improving matters.

“I don’t know,” he added. “I’m not really terribly concerned, I have other things to think about. In my last three months in the job I have other priorities.”

This season’s Champions League final is being staged at Wembley Stadium for the second time in three years to mark the 150th anniversary of the FA.

The May 25 showpiece will be London’s seventh final following previous games in 1963, 1968, 1971, 1978, 1992 and 2011. No other city has staged the match as many times.

The women’s Champions League final is being played at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge stadium on May 23.

Earlier on Friday the two trophies were carried around London on public transport to promote the events.

Champions League ambassador and former England and Chelsea defender Graeme Le Saux said: “Taking the trophies on the tube and bus was a great way to start the day and I’m sure it brightened up the morning for some of the commuters”.

Next week Bayern Munich play Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund meet Real Madrid in the first leg of the semifinals.

Primus National Football League leaders Rayon Sport have given coach Didier Gomez Da Roza a two-year contract extension which keeps him at the club until July 2015, Saturday Sport has leant.

According to the club Secretary General Olivier Gakwaya, the new deal for the Frenchman comes with an increment in his monthly salary. Gomez joined Rayon early this year.

“We have agreed with him, everything has been sorted out and he will be with us until July 2015. Giving him a new contract is an indication that we are happy with his work because everyone is judged on his work and he has ticked all the boxes since joining the club in January,” Gakwaya stated.

Rayon were third from bottom of the league when he signed, but in four months, he has turned around the club’s fortunes, leading them to the top of the table and the Blues are favourite to win the league title.

Gomez has chance to celebrate his new deal in some style if he leads Rayon to victory over traditional archrivals SC Kiyovu Sport next Wednesday at Amahoro Stadium.

Rayon Sport leading the league with 41 points, one ahead of second-placed Police FC and a further six ahead of the defending champions APR.

“I am honored to sign a new deal because it shows that my bosses have recognised my work so I am very excited, and I hope to continue with good work that this team is doing, starting with Saturday’s game against Kiyovu,” he told Saturday Sport.

He added, “My ambition is to keep Rayon Sport going forward and win titles and maybe be do well in Africa.”

Rayon Sport management have plans to tie down several key players including; Kambale Salite, Johnson Bagoole, Faudi Ndayisenga, Karim Nizigiyimana, Faustin Usengimana, Aphrodis and Hategekimana aka Kanombe.

As we commemorate the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, Rwanda will not engage in any sporting activity not until after the April 14.

The sporting fraternity is also remembering victims, including players, coaches, administrators, fans among others, who passed away during the 100-day tragedy that claimed the lives of over a million Rwandans.

Since 1994, the Rwanda Football Federation (Ferwafa) is one of sporting federations that have never held a Genocide commemoration tournament. Federations that have tried to hold such kind of tournaments despite financial constraints include basketball, volleyball, Karate and handball.

Primus National Football League side Mukura Victory Sports is set to organize a memorial tournament to rmember footballers, who were killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

According to Mukura secretary Olivier Mulindahabi, the memorial tournament will be held in either late June or early July.

“We are doing everything possible to have this event, but we are yet to agree on the dates because we are still in contention for the two competitions. We plan to use

Southern clubs to spice the tournament,” he revealed.

Elsewhere, the 2013 Genocide memorial volleyball tournament will be held in May, according to the chairman of the Rwanda Volleyball Federation (FRVB), Gustave Nkurunziza.

Under the partnerships of FRVB and Tunisia volleyball federation, the Northern African country is expected to send two teams to spice the Rutsindura tournament.

Last year’s edition was never hosted due to financial constraints, but this time round, the local volleyball federation is optimistic funds will be available since they have already started planning early.

Basketball used to organize the ‘Never Again’ and Gisembe Memorial Tournament, but due to lack of finances, the tournaments have not been held in the last two years.

RWANDA’S shooting guard Kenneth Gasana is excited after the national basketball team drew Morocco in Group B of the 2013 Fiba Africa Championship which will be held in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire in August.

Gasana currently plays for Moroccan side Plazza Casablanca Sport. He will see some familiar faces when his national team play Morocco.

According to Fiba africa website, Gasana said, “I’m excited because we’re one step closer to the tournament. We will have some tough opponents in our group, but good for competition.

“Also I can have some bragging rights with my teammates once we play Morocco.” added Gasana.

Defending champions Tunisia and debutants Burkina Faso are the other teams grouped in Group B. Hosts Cote d’Ivoire were drawn in Group A and will square off against Egypt, Senegal and Algeria.

In Group C, 10-time Africa champions Angola will take on Central African Republic, Cape Verde and Mozambique.

Africa’s powerhouse Nigeria join Cameroon, Mali and republic of Congo in Group D.

The most improved African team in the past six years, Tunisia enjoy an unbeaten record against both Rwanda and Morocco with wins in 2009 and 2011, making it a four-game winning streak.

On the other hand, the only time Morocco played Rwanda – in 2007 – the former ended on the winning end with a 74-58 success.

Tunisia captain Amine Rzig also said: “Although we respect our opponents, I must say this is a good group for us. We have chances to progress to the knock out stage of the tournament.

“Rwanda has a good team. I remember their shooting guard Kenneth Gasana. He is a really good player. If their big guy Robert Thompson joins the team, they will become even stronger because of his rebounding ability.”

Since Afrobasket turned from a 12- to a 16-team tournament in 2007, some countries have faced each other on number of occasions, while some return to the event following a long absence and Burkina Faso makes its debut.

Rwanda who will be making her fourth appearance, will open her campaign against Burkina Faso on August 21; face Morocco tw days later before winding up her quest against Tunisia on August 25.

The event will take place from 20 to 31 August and the teams that finish in top three will qualify for the 2014 Fiba Basketball World Cup to be held in Spain.
