Former SC Kiyovu coach and current Vital’O head coach Gilbert ‘Yaoundé’ Kanyankore has admitted that Police FC deserved to win the game against his team in the CecafaKagame Cup on Monday.
Police eased past the defending champions 3-1 at Kigali Regional Stadium to become the first team to qualify for the last eight in this year’s tournament.
“They deserved to win because they were better than us and I can only congratulate them; Police are a very strong team and I am sure they will surprise other teams in this tournament,” admitted the former Rayon Sports and Kiyovu coach.
He noted: “We played well and created chances but Police were very good defensively; however, I still believe we will come back strong in the next game against El Meriekh on Friday, which we need to win to qualify for the quarterfinals.”
His Police counterpart Andre Cassa Mbungo played down talk of his side’s potential to go all the way, saying they have a lot of work to do. “We need to continue working hard, we need more wins, we haven’t reached our target, yes we are still in race for the title but it’s still too early.”
Strikers Jerome Sina, Jacques Tuyisenge and Jimmy Mbaraga were all on target as Police staked their title credentials on their debut appearance in the annual tournament.
