Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira

A double from Charles helped Celta Vigo to a 2-0 win against Real Madrid, who fielded a hopelessly weakened team in the mistaken belief they could no longer win the title.

Real, who at the start of the match were trailing leaders Atletico Madrid by four points and second-placed Barcelona by one, sent out a host of B-team players, leaving out the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema, with both eyes fixed on the Champions League final.

Their performance was even worse than that though, as the likes of Luka Modric, Isco, Xabi Alonso, Sergio Ramos and Marcelo were comfortably beaten by mid-table Celta.

To add insult to defeat, Atletico and Barca drew their matches against Malaga and Elche respectively, meaning that – had Real taken the match seriously – they could still have won La Liga in the event of Barca beating Atletico on the final day, which is hardly improbable.

The result means Real can finish second at best, but are likely to come third; a draw in the big match next Sunday would see Atletico win the title, with Barca needing a victory to clinch it on the head-to-head.
