Malian duo, AS Real and Djoliba have been drawn against each other for the 2nd 1/8th round of the 2014 Orange CAF Confederation Cup.
The fixture was the headline for the draw conducted on Tuesday, 1 April 2014 at the CAF Headquarters in Cairo, Egypt. CAF General Secretary Hicham El-Amrani conducted the draw assisted by Hazem El-Hawary, a member of the CAF Interclubs Committee.
Teams eliminated at the 1/8th round of the Orange CAF Champions League were drawn against the sides progressing from the 1/8th round of the CAF Confederation Cup.
The draw witnessed some interesting pairings but the Bamako derby tops the pack. AS Real, losing finalists of the CAF Champions League (formerly African Cup of Champion Clubs) in 1966 will square city rivals Djoliba, losing finalists of the CAF Confederation Cup two years ago for a place at the group phase of the second-tier club championship.
Eight-time African champions, Ahly of Egypt were drawn against Difaa Hassani Jadida of Morocco in an all-North African encounter. It is the successive North African opponent for the Cairo giants, ousted by fellow name bearers, Ahli Benghazi of Libya from the CAF Champions League.
Debutants Medeama of Ghana will face 2012 winners AC Leopards of Congo whilst Kaizer Chiefs of South Africa are up against Ivorian giants, ASEC Mimosas.
Cameroon champions, Coton Sport will face Petro Atletico of Angola whilst Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia contends with Horoya of Guinea.
Nigeria’s torchbearers Bayelsa United will battle Sewe Sport of Cote d’Ivoire in a West African derby whilst Nkana of Zambia treks north again to face Club Athletique Bizertin of Tunisia.
