Amavubi lines up Zimbabwe

RWANDA Football Federation [Ferwafa] has written to Zimbabwe and Kenya requesting for friendly matches ahead of the March 5 Fifa international friendly date.

The Ferwafa spokesperson who also doubles as the vice president Veduste Kayiranga confirmed the development yesterday. He said, “We have made official requests to Kenya and Zimbabwe for a possible friendly match next month,”

“We are waiting for a response but we believe Amavubi will secure a high profile friendly match so as to keep them in competitive mood,” added Kayiranga.

Head coach Eric Nshimiyimana has a tough challenge in April were he must guide Amavubi in the preliminary round of the 2015 Africa Nations Cup qualifiers.

The new qualification system placed Rwanda into the preliminaries to pave way for a challenging route Amavubi will have to endure to qualify for Morocco next year.

The qualifying format that was approved during CAF’s Executive Committee last month differs from the ‘Pools’ format that had been decided in January last year.

The qualifying draw will be conducted on April 27 in Cairo, Egypt, after which Rwanda will be able to know their preliminary round opponents.

If Amavubi manage to negotiate their way out of the preliminaries that could pit them against two formidable outfits, they will join one of the seven groups that will comprise of four teams each.

The two top teams of each group will then qualify for the Nations Cup directly, along with the third-best placed team from the seven groups.

Unlike in the past where qualifiers had to run the course of approximately a year, the 2015 qualifiers will be held in just three months (September, October and November).

It is for this reason that Nshimiyimana has a lot of work on his desk. He may need a pool of over 35 players to be able to successfully negotiate the fixture congestion.

To be able to succeed in his plans, he will have to choose the best performers in the on-going Turbo King Football league and bind them with a few professional players that the country possess scattered in different parts of the world before May when Amavubi to feature in their first preliminary game.
