Cristiano Ronaldo gets a mixed press, but he engineered a touching story as he made a cancer stricken Real Madrid fan’s day.
Ronaldo heard about a young super fan named Jorge, who was diagnosed with cancer in September. On hearing that Jorge idolises Ronaldo – even copying his haircuts, before chemotherapy robbed him of his hair – the Portuguese star promptly sent a signed photo to his home.
But that was just the start of it. Ronaldo then phoned Jorge, and invited him and his family to watch Real’s La Liga match against Celta Vigo on Monday from the comfort of the Portuguese superstar’s private box at the Bernabeu.
Jorge was given then full VIP treatment from the moment he arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu – and he then got to enjoy a star performance from his idol, who scored twice as Real beat Celta 3-0.
“It was a dream come true for me and the truth is, I’m endlessly thankful for what he has done,” said Jorge.
“It’s something very emotional for me, because I never thought it would happen to me.
I was in the VIP box with all his family, and with his son who’s a very intelligent little boy, very friendly and polite and very handsome as well. It was incredible,”said Jorge.
Jorge’s mother, who was with her son at the game, added: “I am thankful to Cristiano beyond words for what he has done for my son.
“He’s such a special person. He’s truly an angel. And my family and I will never, never, forget what he’s done,” she said.
“People can say what they want, but he’s a true angel. Thank you for everything, Cristiano,”she added.
He may be mocked for having a museum dedicated to himself, setting up his own social network and for constantly posing in his underpants, but this time Ronaldo created a story for all the right reasons.
