Interim Rayon Sports head coach Billy Mbusa Kombi who was a member of the Rayon squad that won the Kagame Cup in Zanzibar in 1998 has stated that he is capable of guiding the team to success after beating Gicumbi 2-1 away on Sunday in his first game in charge.
The former Rayon striker took over from Frenchman Didier Gomes da Rosa, who resigned last week citing unpaid salary arrears.
The reigning league champions got their win through goals from Rwanda international striker Meddie Kagere, who scored on the stroke of half time and team captain Fuadi Ndayisenga in the 58th minute.
Jemba Mbanga scored the consolation goal for Jean Baptiste Kayiranga’s newly promoted side with three minutes left on the clock after a glaring mistake by Rayon defender Arafat Serugendo.
After the game Mbusa said he is ready to fully take charge as head coach job if he is given a chance.
He told the media over the weekend, “I am capable of leading this team to success because I know what it takes to build the team like Rayon Sports, so I am ready to do the job if there is trust in me,”
“I know all the players and the club in and out, and I have talked to them (players) following the departure of the head coach. We understand each other quite well and I am pretty sure we can take Rayon far together.”
Rayon Sports has 31 points, two points behind archrivals APR, while moving three points ahead of third-placed AS Kigali, who kept pressure on the two top sides with a 1-0 win away to bottom side Amagaju FC on Saturday after 14 rounds of matches.
