Nkurunzia Saidi of Burundi beat fellow countryman Kabura Shaban 2-1 (6-4, 4-6 and 6-4) in the final of the under -14 ITF Junior circuit that concluded at Cercle Sportif de Kigali on Wednesday. Nkurunziza had, the previous day, eliminated Rwandan favorite Habiyambere Erneste to book a place into the final. Though two Rwandans managed to reach the semi final, none managed to reach the final, setting up an-all Burundian affair on the final day of the circuit.
The under-12 category was a repeat of the U-14 with Burundian Kabura Abdoul Shakur beating his compatriot Mugisha Jonathan 2-0 (7-5, 7-6) to upset the Rwandan competitors. In the doubles event Rwanda’s Ndibwami Jules and Habiyambere Ernest proved too strong for Kabura Shaban and Nkurunziza Saidi edging them 2-0 (6-3, 6-4).
And speaking to umukino.com, the technical director of Rwanda Tennis Federation Kamanzi Fidele, said that overall the performance was good for the Rwandan players. He said, “This was the third leg which we played after playing two legs in Burundi, which we dominated. Habiyambere lost narrowly to Nkurunziza and in Burundi he won the two legs. So, overall it was not bad.”
“If you look at Nkurunzia he’s second seed in Africa while Habiyambere is eighth, so we are satisfied with our performance,” he went on.
After the three-legged circuit the International Tennis Federation is expected to release the final rankings after receiving the final results.
