A tournament that aims at ranking tennis players in the country kicked off this Tuesday the 254th July at Cercle Sportif de Kigali. The week-long event which was organized by the Rwanda Tennis Federation brings together tennis clubs from all corners of the country in different categories. In boys’ category, the seniors and under 16’s will battle it out, while in girls’ category only the seniors will compete for honors.
And speaking to umukino.com, Rwanda national team for the junior team Eric Uwamahoro said that the tournament had not been organized for quite some time, but was optimistic that it would bring change in the sport. He said, “Previously, Gasigwa Jean Claude was the top seeded but he earned the position because of the number of points and competitions he has participated in. So no such competition was held before.”
Regarding how the first day of the tournament went, he said, “There have not been any surprises today. All the eight seeded sailed through, so we expect a rather tough completion tomorrow.”
And that is when Gasigwa will battle it out with unseeded Rutagambwa Alphonse while Matthew Uwizeyimana, the second seeded will face Innocent Nkurunziza, and Nkunda Olivier, who is the third seeded will face Mwamba Kapoyo.
