So far Algeria, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Burundi and Tanzania have confirmed their participation with Kenya fielding in two teams plus three teams from Rwanda, bringing the total to ten. Rwanda will be represented by Team Akagera, Team Muhabura and Team Kalisimbi, and will look to win the tour on home turf.
The two-day event will see participants cycle from Kigali to Kinigi, then Kinigi to Rubavu on the first day. The second day’s track will comprise of a stretch from Rubavu to Kigali.
The annual Kwita Izina Tour is organized by FERWACY in collaboration with Rwanda Development Board, RDB. Since 2010 the tour was put on the calendar of internationally recognized tours of UCI, the world’s cycling running body. It’s also part of the Africa Tour. Last year Daniel Teklehaymanot of Eritrea won the tour, dislodging Rwandan veteran Abraham Ruhumuriza who had won it the precedent year.
